What about signing Saad and trading Pettersson for Domi? That way we'd be replacing McCann and Tanev just fine.

Re-sign Gaudreau, who's smarter. Even though he doesn't hit he can keep the puck and cycle.

Not the worst idea but I don’t think there would be enough cap for Saad.

If all they do is add Saad.....this is a 1st round exit roster.

Goalies suck
D is average at best.
34, 35 36 is hte age of their top 3 C's.
Guetz and Rust are soft

We'll make it work. Saad is a Pittsburgh native and might take a slight (very slight) discount to come home lol

This is a really good roster if they could make it happen.

Barnaby-

That last pairing scares the hell out of me. I don't think either guy is a full time NHL'er right now. I think I would rather keep Pettersson, move Zucker to LW and put ERod or someone else at 3rd line RW.
Also, Ron wasn't too high on POJ being a full time NHL player this year.

Jesus Christ, not E-Rod again lol

PO Joseph and Friedman are good players. They can work it out. If it doesn't we'll always have Riikola and Ruhwedel to help.

We could always spread the wealth and send Matheson to the 3rd pairing with Friedman and PO Joseph with Marino.

I like the idea of POJ and Ruhwedel. Ruhwedel is a good low event D that doesn't take chances and usually plays everything safe. With POJ being super active in the Ozone I think Ruhwedel would be a nice compliment.

Agreed that Gaudreau is part of this equation. Sign him and ZAR at you've spent at least $3.5 of the remaining cap.

If they're goalie hunting, that's the rest of the cap.

Highly doubt he takes a discount to come home to play for a team trending down.

That forward group looks great, but that D group will just get buried and not to mention we are left counting on Jarry to get us somewhere.

Important to remember too, the Pens are a Crosby injury away from missing the playoffs this year. Even though I think he is a bit of a punk, I'd prioritize that Domi trade over signing Saad. Having another guy who can flex over and play center would be a huge asset.

I hate the idea of Matheson-Marino as a pair and if you are starting the year with everyone healthy and POJ-Friedman is the best you can do for the 3rd pair you might as well blow it up and hope we can win the lottery for Wright.

I'm not as down on Friedman as most people are. I think he can be an adequate bottom pairing D-man. I liked what I saw from his game tbh.

The idea of trying Matheson-Marino again is to see if they can gel only. If it doesn't work, mix it up, as we did last season.

Btw: I can't see how PO Joseph can look any worse than Pettersson tbh.

I was thinking more like $1M Gaudreau and $1.5-2M Aston-Reese.

I think Gaudreau may come in at $1.5 if they want term. Is he interested in a $1 million, 1 year "prove it" contract? Unsure.

ZAR similar. If the Penguins want term, I feel they're going to have to hit $2 million per.

Essentially we'll get both of them for a Tanev or a tiny bit less.

Hopefully the money looks more like your prediction.

I really hope Hextall makes a pitch for Timo Meier...simply because I think he'd be an excellent fit. Of course that deal would include Pettersson going the other way. Which I suppose would kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

However, we have been linked (at least peripherally) to Saad, Dvorak, & Schwartz. It might be better to take one of the guys that doesnt cost any assets since Meier already has a hefty price tag.

Sign me up for any of them. Meier would be expensive for sure but a nice fit. Dvorak too.

The bad part is we have to leave Ceci out of our plans even if we trade Pettersson for Domi, lets say. Ceci was excellent for us.

I can't envision Gaudreau getting $1M. I'm expecting around $850K for a season or two.

Ceci was definitely rock solid all year long. In a vacuum, I'd like to give Pettersson away for futures and then give Ceci that money. To your point though, that doesn't give us any money to spend on forwards/goalies. And I'd rather not put that much money in a number 4/5 defenseman anyway.

Honestly, given what Hextall and Burke are looking for, I wouldn't mind seeing what Gudbranson would cost if we can't afford Ceci. He might be in the $2.5M range. He'd be a downgrade from Ceci but if they were adamant on having a "fighter", you could do worse.

Not a bad choice at all. I'd rather have Ceci for $2-2.5M if we could though. Gudbranson shouldn't cost more than Ceci.
